Hundreds of Migrants Arrive at Paso del Norte International Bridge

On Monday, hundreds of migrants arrived at the Paso del Norte International Bridge in Ciudad Juárez, northern Mexico. The cause of the influx was rumors that they could enter El Paso, Texas, and request political asylum. This situation led to the crossing being closed for pedestrians and vehicles on both the Mexican and US sides.

False Information on Social Media Causes Concern

Refugees at the crossing reported that Viber, through social media, began to spread false information that led to the influx of migrants. Magaly Figuera from Venezuela explained that she hoped the information was true because she wanted to work in the United States and be reunited with her daughters who are 40 and 38 years old. Magaly currently lives in fear due to the actions of immigration authorities and is sleeping on the street. Another migrant, Mileidy Ortiz of Colombia, received the information through social media and came alone but is also sleeping on the street.

Migrants Request More Humanity from Authorities

Mileidy Ortiz also called on authorities to treat migrants with more humanity. She explained that migrants have dreams and goals, and they are human beings. The group of refugees hopes that the current situation will lead to a more compassionate response from authorities.

Record Migratory Flow and Tragic Deaths

Mexican civil organizations reported that 2022 was the most tragic year for migrants, with 900 dying while attempting to cross without documents from Mexico to the United States. The region is experiencing a record migratory flow, with 2.76 million undocumented immigrants detained at the United States border with Mexico in fiscal year 2022.
