Fans Urge Serena Williams To Drop Her Postpartum Jean Skirt Challenge

Fans Urge Serena Williams To Drop Her Postpartum Jean Skirt Challenge

Serena Williams

Since welcoming baby Adira in August, Serena Williams has been on a mission to get a denim Valentino skirt that she bought while pregnant to fit her postpartum body. She’s been documenting the journey, sharing videos on Instagram, but now followers are telling her to throw in the towel (throw in the designer bottoms?) and give up the challenge.

This morning, the tennis legend posted another video. This time, she was wearing a pink bodysuit and feeling optimistic. “Ok everyone the jean skirt is baaaaaaackkkkkk … gotta see if I can fit in this skirt yet – saying a little prayer … lol,” she captioned the video.

In this update, Williams was able to get the skirt over her butt (which proved to be a major obstacle last time) and button it, but she couldn’t zip it or breathe. (Both of which tend to be nice.)

“I might have to check back in another few weeks,” she said.

But followers are saying there’s no need to check back in — because her worth is not dependent on some damn denim.

“Throw that skirt away and buy a new one with a lil stretch b/c your body is perfect.”

“Girl, your body is a blessing, a national treasure. Don’t nobody care about that damn jean skirt!”

“You look amazing… just give that skirt away. And look fabulous in something else. That skirt does not define your hard work.”

Plus, they say this all has to do with her natural curves — not necessarily being postpartum. “Gurl … we just got that natural cake and it’s ok!! You look gorgeous Queen!!”

And she has plenty of other things to wear that she can wear instead. “Forget the skirt … you look hot in that body suit!!”

Williams also shares 6-year-old daughter Olympia with husband and co-founder of Reddit, Alexis Ohanian. Her last skirt update was in May, and fans were so appreciative of her honesty and insistent on hyping her up.

“Thank you for doing this and showing that it’s a process after giving birth for world class athletes,” actress Octavia Spencer said. “You’re even more stunning and real!”

“I’m crying,” another fan said. “I love that she would show us this.”

And we did too! Williams has been so open and real about her postpartum body. But we also don’t want her to think that completing this self-inflicted skirt challenge changes how we see her or that it makes her any more or less valuable as a proud mom of two. Don’t let that zipper or the number on that skirt define you, Serena! Your fans and daughters look up to you either way, and sending the message that there’s no reason to “bounce back” is just as important as sharing the trials and tribulations of a mom who wants to feel comfortable in her body the way she did pre-baby.
