Midnight Suns, the next big Marvel superhero game, is a turn-based game with RPG and card elements. Developer Firaxis shared more information about the card-based strategy battle system that players will use to fight Lilith in battle, following the new gameplay trailer it released.
Midnight Suns is being developed by the XCOM makers of Firaxis, While there aren’t major differences in the game’s combat system, in addition to turn-based combat, players will be able to use the environment, team composition, and various random skill cards against enemies.
As explained in the gameplay trailer, in Midnight Suns you’ll use three heroes, a deck, and a random ability card to counter your enemies. Your abilities will depend on the cards you receive randomly at the start of each battle, so you will have to make different strategic decisions. As you progress in the game, you will be able to increase the power of your cards.
As seen in the trailer, Midnight Suns looks like a combination of XCOM and Slay the Spire. Although the game does not have a rogue-like content like Slay the Spire, it is quite reminiscent of Slay the Spire with its random card mechanics at the beginning of each hand.
Players will be able to use these skill cards together with the environment to inflict massive damage to enemies. When trapped, you can detonate gas tanks near your enemies to quickly neutralize bad guys.
If your team is compatible with each other, you can perform team attacks. Improving your relationships with the characters during the social episodes of Midnight Suns will also improve your team attacks.
Also, since Marvel’s revealed the tactical card battle system in Midnight Suns, players have expressed concerns that there may be loot boxes in the game.
To the concerns of players, the developers have confirmed that there are no micropayments related to the loot box or card system in Midnight Suns. There will be cosmetic items available for purchase in the game, but these items will not affect the balance of the game.
Hey folks, regarding our battle card system, there are no loot boxes in Marvel’s @MidnightSuns or related microtransactions to get more cards (i.e. Gamma Coils). We will have purely cosmetic character skins for purchase that do not affect game balance in any way https://t.co/lHhdwbMpSZ
