First Look: Hawkgirl and Green Lantern in Action on Superman Set Photos

While Superman will serve as the titular hero in the DC Universe’s first theatrical feature, the James Gunn-directed film promises to feature an array of other comic book characters to bring the new cinematic universe to life. Among these are Hawkgirl and Green Lantern, and thanks to the latest set photos, fans now have a glimpse of how these heroes will appear when the film is released in 2025.

Gunn and his team have been diligently filming Superman in and around Cleveland. This has resulted in numerous set photos surfacing on social media, providing a peek into the cast and production as Cleveland is transformed into Metropolis. The first looks at Hawkgirl and Green Lantern were among the latest images to emerge online, featuring them alongside David Corenswet’s Superman, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, and a stand-in wearing a blue-screen suit.

Isabela Merced is set to portray Hawkgirl in what will be her second stint in the superhero genre after her role as Anya Corazon in 2024’s Madame Web. The recent images show her without wings, which are expected to be added digitally during post-production.

As for Green Lantern, the film will introduce the Guy Gardner version of the hero, played by Nathan Fillion, a frequent James Gunn collaborator. The images show Fillion donning Gardner’s iconic bowl-cut red hair. He also sports a jacket that is part of his Green Lantern suit, which appears to have been modernized from the large-collared jackets and vests familiar to fans of the comics.

Some fans have speculated that the blue-screened character might be a physical stand-in for Metamorpho, a character whose powers would likely require significant digital effects.

The three heroes shown in the images are just a few of the characters confirmed to appear in Superman, as Gunn and Peter Safran aim to kick off the DCU with a strong start.

Another character confirmed for the film is The Engineer, portrayed by Venezuelan actress Maria Gabriela de Faria Chacon. The Engineer is a member of The Authority, who are slated to have their own feature film as part of the DCU’s first slate of movies.

The Authority was first introduced by the independent comic publisher WildStorm in 1999 and was later incorporated into DC continuity in 2011 after DC acquired WildStorm. Gunn has hinted at a “morally complex” team that believes “the world is completely broken” and will take extreme measures to make it “better.”

Aside from The Engineer, it remains unknown which other members of The Authority will form the team in their DCU debut.

Set photos from Superman have hinted at numerous other characters as well. Fans have speculated about a black-suited character seen in some images, with what appears to be a U on their suit. Theories range from this character being Bizarro or Ultraman, both of whom have been rumored to appear in the film at various points. However, there have been no official hints confirming the appearance of either character.

Superman is scheduled for a theatrical release on July 11, 2025.
