Corn crop conditions in France worsened for a ninth consecutive week last week, according to data on Friday from agricultural bureau FranceAgriMer, in a further sign of the damage caused by a hot and dry summer. the largest producer in the European Union.

An estimated 43% of France’s grain maize crop was in good or excellent condition as of September 5, up from 45% a week earlier, according to the data.

Maize is among the crops most exposed to France’s worst drought on record, which has been exacerbated by successive heat waves that have also fueled forest fires.

The condition of the crop has deteriorated rapidly in recent months. This week’s good/excellent rating of 43% compares to 89% a year ago and was almost half of the 84% on July 4.

The hot, dry summer also boosted crop development and allowed farmers to start harvesting earlier than in previous years. The corn harvest usually starts in mid-September in France.

About 5% of the corn area had been harvested on September 5, down from 1% the previous week.
