Those responsible for NEOM, the smart city that Saudi Arabia is building in the province of Tabuk, and the German company Volocopter they announced this Wednesday its plan to “design, implement and operate the first public mobility system” of electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, which is expected to begin operating in the next two or three years in Saudi territory.
According to NEOM, the air taxi and vertical logistics services resulting from the association with the German firm will be integrated into the general multimodal public transport system and zero emissions of the city.
During the first stage of the project, the passenger transport service will be provided by 10 two-seater VoloCity aircraft, while five VoloDrones will carry out cargo operations.

The 15 electric aircraft are expected to enter operations between 2024 and 2025, and to be the spearhead of an ecological air transport system that connects the urban section of NEOM, known as’ The Line ‘, with the industrial part,’ Oxagon ‘, with the intention of limiting the use of automobiles, in adherence to the sustainable logic that has guided the development of the city.
