GeForce RTX 2060 12 GB: Another good mining graphics card

The 12 GB version of the GeForce RTX 2060 should be available since December 7, 2021. Numerous manufacturers presented their models on time, while Nvidia did not even acknowledge the graphics card in a blog post. As a result, there is no official price recommendation. In the meantime, there is no available copy in the German trade.

On the Chinese platform PC Market one of the few tests of the GeForce RTX 2060 12 GByte worldwide can be found. The 3D performance is where you would expect a GeForce RTX 2060 on steroids, i.e. with 256 additional shader cores. The GeForce RTX 3060 is 10 to 20 percent faster in most games.

When mining the cryptocurrency, the GeForce RTX 2060 12 GB is practically as fast and efficient as the previous GeForce RTX 2060 – almost 32 megahashes per second (MH / s) were measured with a power consumption of less than 85 watts. That equates to around 380 kilohashes per joule. To do this, the GPU was underclocked, the power limit reduced and the memory overclocked.

The result is not surprising, since the Ethereum algorithm from Ethereum, the most profitable cryptocurrency for mining with GPUs, is always memory-limited and both models have an identical transfer rate of 336 GB / s. The faster the GPU can access the so-called Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG) in the graphics memory, the more hashes it can calculate per second. The shader processing power, on the other hand, is of secondary importance.

Double the capacity is currently of no use in mining, at least at the moment, because the DAG is around 4.6 GB in size. With current growth, 6 GB of graphics memory per GPU will be sufficient for mining until spring 2024. By then, the Ethereum Foundation wants to have abolished mining of its own crypto currency. Other cryptocurrencies take up less memory than Ethereum.

As long as the GeForce RTX 2060 12 GB is available to buy, mining farms should be happy about the graphics card. Unlike the RTX 3000 series, it has no crypto brake, so it runs “out of the box”. With the GeForce RTX 3060, for example, the driver is supposed to recognize the Ethash access pattern and halve the mining performance, which results in around 22 MH / s.

Mining tools like lolMiner partially bypass the brake, so that around 35 MH / s are possible with a GeForce RTX 3060, but with a power consumption of more than 100 watts. According to Reddit posts also work with new RTX-3060 versionswho have favourited Nvidia’s GA104 GPU instead of the GA106.
