In a shocking incident at Apalachee High School, teacher David Phenix found himself on the receiving end of gunfire but emerged from the ordeal expressing gratitude for his life. On September 4, he was struck by two bullets but described himself as “incredibly blessed.”
Phenix recounted how the bullets – one that hit his side and the other his foot – narrowly missed critical parts of his body. “Had things been a quarter inch to the left or right, things could have been vastly different,” he shared in an emotional message on Facebook.
While acknowledging his physical injuries that require stitches, staples, and physical therapy, he also indicated that the mental recovery might be equally daunting. “I am sure trying to truly wrap my brain around what happened on September 4th will require just as much rehab,” he reflected.
The tragic event was linked to 14-year-old Colt Gray, who is accused of causing the deaths of four individuals, while nine others sustained injuries during the outbreak of violence. Among those hurt, seven sustained gunshot wounds, including Phenix himself.
In his post, Phenix expressed deep appreciation for those who took swift action amid the chaos. He specifically mentioned a co-teacher who helped control the situation while applying pressure to his wound. “You put yourself in harm’s way to save me while managing a class of 23 scared and terrified teenagers,” he praised.
Additionally, Phenix acknowledged two brave 14-year-old students who assisted him by applying pressure to his injury on the co-teacher’s instruction: “You both are exceptional young people and have my everlasting gratitude,” he remarked.
Phenix further extended his thanks to first responders, law enforcement, nurses, and doctors who came to the aid of those affected that day, along with his family for their emotional support throughout this harrowing experience. He felt a tremendous sense of gratitude for the community, which he described as having an “outpouring of encouragement, support, love, and compassion.”
As he continues to recover, Phenix emphasized that his sorrow for the families of the deceased—two teachers and two students—remains a central concern. “Families were shattered and worlds were turned upside down,” he wrote, urging others to keep these families in their prayers.
Phenix articulated the lasting impact of this traumatic event, stating that the memories of the sights, sounds, and actions will be forever etched in his mind. He acknowledged a complex range of emotions that he is struggling to process—from anger and mourning to gratitude for being alive. “Processing the reasons behind September 4th will be a long road that will likely never be fully understood,” he lamented.
In connection with the incident, Colt Gray has been charged with four counts of felony murder, with further charges anticipated. His father, Colin Gray, has also faced legal repercussions, including charges for involuntary manslaughter and second-degree murder. Allegations state he allowed his son to possess the weapon involved in the shooting.
As of now, neither Colt Gray nor his father has entered a plea regarding these serious charges.
