Gerard Butler and Morena Baccarin will reprise as the attractive pair of heroes from ‘Greenland: The Last Refuge’ in an unexpected sequel. This post-apocalyptic adventure drama opened last year and grossed $52 million at the box office despite the pandemic.
It is not an impressive collection for a production of 35 million but it sold very well taking advantage of the situation caused by COVID-19; the video-on-demand business coupled with a streaming deal with HBO Max is enabling STX Films to make a profit of approximately $60-$80 million. So ‘Greenland 2’ is already underway.
Crossing Europe’s Frozen Desert
In addition to the protagonists, ‘Greenland 2’ will repeat two other of the main creative managers of the first installment, screenwriter Chris Sparling and director Ric Roman Waugh. It seems that everyone was left wanting to put the Garrity family back in trouble.
As reported by Hollywood Reporter, in this second part we will see how the characters of Morena Baccarin and Gerard Butler have to leave the safety of the bunker they arrived in the previous film. After surviving the first catastrophe, the Garrity must embark on another perilous journey in search of a new home through the decimated frozen wasteland that the European continent has become.
It’s a bit lazy just thinking about the journey ahead of them even though it’s the kind of show that feels great on vacation. Filming is scheduled to begin in 2022 and I’m looking forward to knowing how this sequel will be titled in Spain. If the first one came to us as ‘Greenland: The Last Refuge’… maybe ‘Greenland 2: The Last Definitive Refuge’? ‘Greenland 2: The Last Shelter Didn’t Work’?
