Lady Bird and Little Women director Greta Gerwig will officially direct the Barbie movie. Adapted from the iconic toy, the movie will star Margot Robbie, whom we know from Suicide Squad and The Wolf of Wall Street.

According to Variety’s report, Gerwig Warner Bros. had been a part of his project since 2019. That year, he hired Noah Baumbach, who appeared in Marriage Story, to write the film.

British Vogue’s 2021 issueRobbie has occasionally stated that Gerwig will be directing the film and that the project comes with “a lot of burden and nostalgic elements”. Variety’s sources also confirmed that Gerwig will direct the film.

“But it can also be handled in exciting ways,” Robbie said. “People often feel like they know what the movie will be about the first time they hear about Barbie. When they hear Greta Gerwig will write and direct, it’s like, ‘Maybe I don’t know’.”

The story of one of the world’s best-known toys, Barbie, is expected to begin shooting in 2022. The release date of the movie is planned to be 2023.

Robbie will produce the movie with LuckyChap Entertainment. The company most recently produced Promising Young Woman.

This Barbie movie was previously produced by Sony, and both Amy Schumer and Anne Hathaway were considered for lead roles during the project’s development phase.
