In a thrilling climax, the Cleveland Guardians secured a playoff spot by defeating the Minnesota Twins 3-2 in the 10th inning on Thursday. Andres Gimenez played a key role in this victory, hitting a single that brought home Jose Ramirez, who was stationed on second base as the automatic runner.
The game took a tense turn when Minnesota’s reliever Caleb Thielbar struck out Josh Naylor. In a strategic move, the Twins chose to intentionally walk Lane Thomas, setting the stage for Gimenez, who had already made an impact with three hits throughout the game.
On a decisive 3-2 pitch, Gimenez produced a hit that traveled deep into right field, comfortably allowing Ramirez to score. As Ramirez rounded third base, the Guardians’ dugout erupted in celebration, spilling onto the field in unison. This moment marked the team’s 42nd comeback victory, reinforcing their reputation for resilience.
“That’s us,” remarked Gimenez when reflecting on the game. “That’s the Cleveland Guardians.”
This victory also made the Guardians the second American League (AL) team to secure a postseason berth this year, following the New York Yankees, who achieved their playoff qualification just a day earlier.
With this win, Cleveland has an opportunity to put an end to the longest active World Series championship drought, which extends back to 1948 when the franchise was still referred to as the Indians.
“The goal is to get in,” said first-year manager Stephen Vogt. “Once you’re in, you have a shot.”
As tension mounted in the 10th inning, the Twins put pressure on the Guardians by loading the bases with one out against reliever Eli Morgan. However, Morgan managed to escape the precarious situation by retiring Carlos Correa on a foul pop and Byron Buxton on a sharp liner to right field.
The Guardians’ bullpen, which has been a cornerstone of their success this season, put together an impressive performance, combining for 5⅔ innings without allowing a hit.
“They’re the best bullpen in the league for a reason, and they prove it time and again,” said Minnesota’s Matt Wallner.
In addition to Gimenez’s clutch hit, rookie Kyle Manzardo hit a home run, contributing to the Guardians’ victory and lowering their magic number to clinch the AL Central title to just three.
For the Twins, the loss was significant as they find themselves in a tight race for the wild card and now share a tie with the Detroit Tigers for the final spot. Thankfully for the Twins, they currently hold the tiebreaker advantage.
This season has unfolded unexpectedly for the Guardians, who ended the previous season with a 76-86 record while transitioning away from long-time manager Terry Francona. Many believed the team would be competitive but not among the league’s elite.
However, the Guardians have thrived under Vogt’s leadership. Before this season, he had never filled out a lineup card, yet he has orchestrated a remarkable turnaround for the team.
The postgame atmosphere was electric as Vogt was bestowed with a championship belt by catcher Austin Hedges, who was also doused with champagne and beer in celebration. Hedges praised Vogt as “one of the most special humans I’ve ever met,” adding that his management this year stands out even against the backdrop of Francona’s storied legacy.
From mid-April onwards, the Guardians maintained control of the AL Central division, holding onto first place for the majority of the last five months.
While standout performances from All-Stars like Ramirez, Naylor, Steven Kwan, and Emmanuel Clase have been crucial, contributions from younger players throughout the roster have kept the Guardians consistently competitive in the league.
Despite losing their ace Shane Bieber early in the season, Vogt managed to adapt as injuries and performance issues arose in the rotation.
During the game, the Twins initially struggled against Cleveland rookie Joey Cantillo, who had remarkable outings in his previous two starts. However, the Twins managed to score two runs in the fifth inning, taking a brief 2-1 lead. The Guardians tied the game in the sixth with a sacrifice fly from Brayan Rocchio.
Manzardo’s excellent form continues, as he hit his fourth homer of the season in the first inning. Since returning from Triple-A Columbus on September 1, he has maintained a .357 batting average, accumulating four home runs and seven RBIs across 16 games.
