Game of Thrones fans can look forward to an exciting collection of “successor series” that will explore the vast and celebrated world of Westeros. While some of these series are still in development, others have already been cancelled despite having been announced and even filmed. Here are some of the confirmed and cancelled projects that HBO is working on:
A Knight of Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knights
This live-action series is based on The Tales of Dunk and Egg, a short novel series that follows the adventures of Ser Duncan the Tall and his squire, Aegon “Egg” Targaryen. The story explores Egg’s unexpected rise to the Iron Throne and his connection to Jon Snow’s mentor, Maester Aemon. Despite a few rejected proposals, this series is still in development.
Bloodmoon
This series was set in the Age of Heroes, a time of peace in Westeros after the pact between the First Men and the Children of the Forest. While it had already filmed a pilot episode and had a cast led by Naomi Watts, HBO ultimately decided not to continue with the project.
Jon Snow
This project is based on the beloved character played by Kit Harington, who grows from a man who “knows nothing” to a powerful leader. While the controversy surrounding the final season may have impacted viewers’ reactions to the ending, this series aims to give fans more of Jon Snow’s story beyond the Wall.
Flea Bottom
Named after the poorest slum in King’s Landing, this series would have explored the lives of characters such as Gendry Baratheon and Davos Seaworth. However, it appears that HBO has abandoned this project.
The Sea Snake
Originally titled Nine Voyages, this series will tell the story of Corlys Velaryon, a sea captain whose travels brought him wealth and power in Westeros. This character already appeared in The House of the Dragon and is one of the few Valyrian families.
The Golden Empire
This animated series will explore Yi Ti, an empire in Essos that was visited by Corlys in The Sea Snake. It remains to be seen if this series will be linked to The Sea Snake or any of the other live-action productions.
10,000 Ships / The Nymeria series
This live-action series will focus on Nymeria, a legendary princess who founded the kingdom of Dorne and led refugees from Essos after being expelled by the ancestors of the Targaryen family. While this series was announced in 2021, it is still in development.
While these series offer exciting new ways to explore the world of Westeros, it remains to be seen if they will all come to fruition. Fans will have to wait and see which projects HBO will ultimately greenlight and which will be consigned to the dustbin of history.
