Actor Ray Liotta died yesterday at the age of 67. An unexpected tragedy that hit Hollywood, who has not wanted to miss the opportunity to say goodbye to one of the great actors of these decades, present in such iconic films as One of Ours, Field of Dreams, The Force of a Lesser Being, or John Q.
Precisely, Martin Scorsese, with whom he worked in One of Ours, has been one of those who wanted to pay his respects to the actor. “I am absolutely shocked and devastated by the sudden and unexpected death of Ray Liotta. He had such a unique talent, adventurous and brave as an actor,” said the American filmmaker in a statement.
“Playing Henry Hill in One of Ours was a difficult task, because the character had so many facets, so many complicated layers and Ray was in almost every scene of this long and hard shoot,” Scorsese recalled of the character played by Liotta. “He left me absolutely amazed, and I will always be proud of the work he did on that film. My heart goes out to yours and I am pained by this loss too soon.”
Scorsese’s reaction has been one of many, as actors such as Kevin Costner, Jennifer Lopez, Lorraine Blanco, Jamie Lee Curtis, Elizabeth Banks and Robert De Niro, and directors such as James Mangold, among many others, have wanted to say goodbye to the actor through social networks.
“Devastated to hear the news of Ray Liotta’s passing. While he leaves an incredible legacy, he will always be Shoeless Joe Jackson [his co-star on The Playing Field] in my heart. What happened in the film was real. God gave us that trick. Now God has Ray.”
“Ray was my partner in Shades of Blue… the first thing that comes to mind is how kind I was to my children. Ray was the epitome of a tough guy who was all feelings inside… I guess that’s what made him such an attractive actor to watch.”
“I am completely devastated to hear the terrible news about my Ray. I can be anywhere in the world and people will come and tell me that their favorite movie is One of Ours. Then they always ask what was the best part of making that movie. My answer has always been the same: Ray Liotta.”
“We met in a little movie, The Detail’s, and he blew me away. I always admired his performance, but I really enjoyed it as a human being. It was lovely. We’ve been collaborating on Cocaine Bear these past few months. I just saw him and hugged him,” read part of Elizabeth Banks’ statement.
“Shocked and saddened to learn of Ray Liotta’s passing. Beyond his exterior as a tough guy and the airtight emotions of his signature characters, he was a sweet, playful and passionate collaborator and a brilliant actor. RIP.”
For his part, Robert de Niro also wanted to show his condolences through a statement: “I was very saddened to learn of Ray’s passing. He was too young to have left us. He can rest in peace,” said his partner from One of Ours. Ray Liotta leaves us like this too soon, but in the memory will always remain his famous performances.
