Motorola, Huawei, Oppo and Samsung already have them on offer: folding cell phones. Now the former Huawei subsidiary Honor has announced the first mobile phone with a foldable display. The Magic V is currently only intended for the Chinese market, where it costs the equivalent of around 1400 euros. It is not known if and when the Honor Magic V will come to Europe.
The design of the Magic V is based on models such as the Z Fold3 from Samsung or the recently presented Find N from Oppo: the cell phone is folded vertically inwards, a second display is on the “back” and enables control when folded.
7.9 inches unfolded
According to Honor, this secondary screen is 6.45 inches, has a resolution of 2560 x 1080 pixels and a refresh rate of 120 Hertz. The main display, through which the fold runs, measures 7.9 inches, has 90 Hertz and a resolution of 2272 x 1984 pixels. Both displays are larger than those of the Find N from the Chinese competition and the Z Fold3 from Samsung.
The version of the Honor Magic V announced for China is equipped with 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage space, and there is also a version with double flash memory. The centerpiece is the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 with 5G support. Since Honor no longer belongs to Huawei, the company has been allowed to buy parts from US companies again. Huawei is allowed to purchase components from Qualcomm due to a special permit, but 5G hardware is excluded from this.
It also means that the Honor phone could come out in the west with a current version of Google’s Android operating system and use Google services in the process. This is the case with the Honor 50, which has been available since November. However, it is unclear how long Honors freedom of trade will last. Several US lawmakers have been trying to add Honor to the entity list that includes former parent company Huawei over the past year.
