It was clear that Japan was going to surprise at the Opening Ceremony of the Olympic Games in Tokyo 2020. And boy has it done: starting with a parade of countries enlivened with video game soundtracks – from Final Fantasy a Chrono Trigger pasando por Nier, Monster Hunter e incluso Sonic the Hedgehog-, until finishing with something that is pure Japan: A high-tech show.
1,800 drones over Tokyo
At the beginning of February 2017, in the middle of the spectacular Half-Time show of Super Bowl 52 that starred Lady Gaga, the most remembered part was right at the beginning, when behind the singer we saw a series of stars draw in the night sky white that were later stained red and blue, forming the flag of the United States while Gaga sang God Bless America in the most patriotic moment of the night.
How did they achieve that effect? CGI in a pre-recorded scene? Live integrated effect? It was something physical and real with 300 drones flying for real by the sky courtesy of the Intel brand.
We jump 4 years, just early in the afternoon today, at the grand finale of the Opening Ceremony of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games: The whole world is stunned to see how a kind of black hole appears that suddenly draw a globe that rises to the skies of Tokyo from the stadium. A perfect sphere, which perfectly delimits the 5 continents, and is made in real time, with drones. Thousands of drones and above giving the design an effect of earth rotation and everything.
Breaking the PyeonChang record
Exactly 1,824 synchronized drones that recreated the Earth, and that following the tone of the ceremony seemed a nod to the Final Fantasy saga, mixing at the same time the most cutting-edge technology and the concept of Mother Earth.
In a type of act that seems to have become fashionable, again Intel’s name is on the back, using similar technology seen in the 2017 Super Bowl already the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeonChang.
