“That was the first conceived shot of the movie, when you have everyone the avengers together. It was one of those digital movie storyboards that come along with these movies with so much visual effect, you have to really think through what you’re going to shoot. It’s in their nature.”, explained the cinematographer of The Avengers. Then he added: “It was also one of those shots that are trademarked. Everyone wanted to know what the ‘trailer moment’ of the film was. Originally, with the 2.40:1 aspect ratio, we had to shoot from very far away, but we wanted to do something up close, closed.”He pointed and proudly said: “I think we made the right decision”.
Why was the aspect ratio changed in The Avengers?
Maybe it’s a minor detail that not everyone noticed, but The Avengers came with a radical change in his photography with respect to the films of the MCU. It was not shot in a letter-size aspect ratio and according to McGarveyThey received some criticism for this. However, there was a logic behind the change: “With Joss Whedon We thought it was best, since we were shooting in New York with characters of different heights, instead of having a letter-size aspect ratio and having to take wider shots than necessary. A little more height allowed us to frame Hulk with Black Widow And with things flying by, plus New York’s vertical bias, we felt that height was more appropriate.”.
