Google Maps is an app that downloads part of the data when it comes to showing us results, but not all, since otherwise it would occupy a large part of the internal storage space of the mobile. But for a few years, it is possible to download maps from the app to the mobile to be able to consult them offline in a place where there is no Wi-Fi or the data reception is bad.
Or simply not to spend the 4G of our rate. An ideal function if you are planning a trip to a specific place or if you use Maps in the city, now that it is summer and many people are going on a trip either for a few weeks or a day on the weekend.

You can save maps on the device or on the SD card of your Android or iPhone mobile. If you change where you want to save them, you will have to download them again.
Save offline maps to an SD card
By default, offline maps are downloaded to the device’s internal storage, but you can download them to an SD card. If your device is running Android 6.0 or higher, you can only save maps to an SD card that is configured for portable storage.
- Insert a SD card on the mobile if you have the slot
- Open the app Google Maps.
- Top left, tap Menu> Offline Maps.
- Top right, tap Settings.
- In “Storage preferences“, select SD Card instead of Device.
Save battery and mobile data (only for Android)
Even if you use offline maps, you can still use other applications with mobile data.
- Open the Google Maps app on your Android phone or tablet.
- Tap Menu
- Activate Wi-Fi only.
When you’re offline, you can get directions for driving but not for public transport, cycling or walking. Traffic information, alternate routes, and lane directions will also not be displayed. And you will not be able to change routes to, for example, avoid tolls or ferries.
To save mobile data and battery, use the “Wi-Fi only” mode. In this mode, if you don’t have a Wi-Fi connection, Google Maps will only use the offline map data you’ve downloaded. Before activating this mode, make sure to download the offline maps. To activate it, open the application Google Maps> Menu> flip the switch located next to “Solo Wi-Fi”.
