How to install an SSD on PS5?

The official PlayStation manual outlines in detail the steps you must take to install your M.2 SSD. It should be noted that the console must be turned off at all times. Have a # 1 Phillips-type screwdriver or anything with a star tip on hand.

  1. Turn off your PS5 console. Next, remove all cables and devices from your PS5 console. Wait a moment for your PS5 console to cool down.

  2. Place your PS5 console on a flat surface with a protective cover and remove the base.

  3. Position your PS5 console so that the PS logo is facing down and the power button is facing away from you.

  4. Hold the bottom right corner edge with your right hand and the top left corner edge of the cover with your left hand.

  5. Gently lift the lid with your right hand.

  6. Slide the cover off with your left thumb while using the fingers of your left hand to stabilize the PS5 console. The cover will lift. There is a long rectangular cover over the expansion slot, fixed with a screw at the top.

  7. Remove the expansion slot cover screw (A), and then remove the cover.

  8. Remove the screw (B) carefully. Move the spacer (C) to the corresponding slot according to the size of your M.2 SSD.

  9. Hold the edge of your M.2 SSD, align it with the notch on the expansion connector, and then insert it firmly all the way, starting diagonally upward. Make sure that the M.2 SSD PCB is resting at the height of the standoff, without being obstructed by the cooling structure. If you continue to the next step and the M.2 SSD is inserted incorrectly or not seated firmly all the way into the expansion connector, the terminal and the PS5 console could be damaged.

  10. Tilt your M.2 SSD down and secure it to the standoff with the screws. Make sure your cooling structure doesn’t obstruct the screw.

  11. Attach the expansion slot cover and fix it with the screw. If the slot cover does not close properly, your cooling frame will likely exceed the size requirements.

  12. Replace the cover an inch from the top edge and slide it into place. You will hear a click when the cover fits snugly.

  13. Connect the AC power cord, cables, and base. Then turn on the power. When you turn on the PS5 console, the formatting guide appears. Follow the onscreen instructions to format your M.2 SSD.
