PlayStation 5 has completed one year on the market this November. The new generation of Sony consoles celebrates its first anniversary with a few exclusive titles already behind them, added to a catalog of releases that will not stop growing throughout the next season. Mark Cerny is the lead architect of this cutting-edge product, whose design was a multi-year job. “We had been receiving requests to include an SSD from PlayStation 4,” Cerny acknowledges in the video. “In particular, Tim Sweeney, who is the visionary founder of Epic Games, said that ‘hard drives were holding the industry back.’ For this reason, to speed up the loading, reading and transfer of data, thus avoiding duplication of the same, one of the great objectives went through the so-called fast travel, once compromised by the slow speeds of hard drives. To achieve speed you needed a solid memory – which in this case is capable of transferring up to 5.5 GB per second. Thus, it went from sometimes almost a minute to just a couple of seconds.

On PlayStation 4, fast travel can take anywhere from “15 seconds to a minute,” he argues. “On the much faster PlayStation 5, anything takes from a fraction of a second to a few seconds. That means there will be no more subway rides in Marvel’s Spider-Man, which is really a shame, I liked those subway rides, ”he jokes.

Another challenge, the latter more technical, went through enabling backward compatibility with PS4 titles, which is not as easy as it sounds. According to Cerny, there are “hundreds of essential functions of the PlayStation 4 GPU that developers rely on, and for their games to run smoothly on PlayStation 5 each of those functions must be properly included.”

The console already has titles that take advantage of all these technological benefits; with special emphasis and with all the credit to Ratchet & Clank: A Part Dimension, which is almost without discussion the most technologically advanced PlayStation Studios video game to date. The work of Insomniac Games, along with titles such as Demon’s Souls or Returnal, make up a portfolio of titles that will be expanded in 2022 with God of War: Ragnarok, Horizon Forbidden West and Gran Turismo 7, among many others. These last three available on both PS5 and PS4.
