On September 19, 2024, the Deer Park police announced the discovery of human remains in an SUV linked to a significant pipeline fire that erupted on Monday. The SUV was retrieved from the incident site after officials secured access early Thursday morning.
According to the Deer Park Police Department, “At 7 a.m. on September 19, 2024, officers were able to access the incident site and recover the white vehicle connected to the pipeline fire. During this process, human remains were located and removed.”
The SUV had collided with a pipeline valve after crashing through some bushes and a fence, leading to a catastrophic explosion and fire, as recounted by eyewitnesses.
Details regarding the identity of the driver and the circumstances surrounding the event remain undisclosed. By Thursday, the fire was still active, but officials anticipated completing repairs on the pipeline later that evening.
The city of Deer Park indicated that the situation had escalated into a criminal investigation, which will continue until more information becomes available. A statement from the city confirmed that no further details would be released until the investigation reaches a conclusion.
There was a heavy police presence at the scene as authorities began their inquiry into the incident. Witness Sherry Richard described the moment of the crash to local news outlets, noting that she saw the SUV smash through the fence into the pipeline valve, sending the vehicle airborne.
“Once it hit the ground, it just ignited,” Richard said. “It was just terrible because your first instinct is to check if that person is okay, but there’s nothing you can do in that moment.”
The impact and subsequent fire resulted in the evacuation of hundreds of residents. Additionally, thousands lost electricity, although power was restored by Wednesday.
Steve Hutto and his wife, Diane, returned to find their home severely damaged by the flames. Diane Hutto expressed her shock, saying, “I thought it was a nuclear bomb. I just fell out of the chair, and the dogs were already out the door trying to escape. When I got down the stairs, I realized it was the pipeline.”
Energy Transfer, the pipeline owner, is currently collaborating with contractors to manage the fire. Once containment is achieved, they plan to replace the damaged sections of the pipeline.
According to Kaitlyn Bluejacket, a spokesperson for the Deer Park Office of Emergency Management, both the local police and the Harris County Medical Examiner are involved in the follow-up investigation of the incident.
The evacuation order for local residents was officially lifted on Wednesday evening at 6 p.m., allowing families to return to their homes amidst the chaotic aftermath.
