Hundreds of people demonstrate in Madrid for the shielding of pensions

Some 500 people are demonstrating this morning in Madrid, convened by the State Board for the Shielding of Pensions (MERP), to demand that public pensions be recognized in the Constitution as a fundamental right and that their privatization or cuts be prohibited.

The co-spokesperson of the MERP Joanen Cunyant has highlighted the “unity” of this movement, which integrates more than 500 organizations and supports some 300 personalities in the field of culture.

About to celebrate ten years of existence, they assure that they have collected 2.6 million signatures that support their claim and predict that next year “will be an important year for the constitutional armor.”

The also co-spokesperson Sara García explained that they wanted to celebrate this new mobilization at the end of 2022 to respond with a “clamor for unity at the moment of uncertainty for a new pension reform”.

The demonstration runs from the Plaza de Jacinto Benavente to the Plaza del Museo Reina Sofía, where seventeen representatives of organizations such as USO, Cortes Cero and the Union of Nursing Technicians (SAE) are expected to intervene, and representatives of the field of culture such as film director and screenwriter Joaquín Oristrell and writer Fany Rubio are expected to join the closing ceremony.
