On September 14, 2021, Apple presented its new iPhone 13 series to the public: iPhone 13 Mini, iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone Pro Max. The better technical features of the Pro models are reflected in the price: it costs 799 euros the cheapest iPhone, the iPhone 13 Mini, with 128 GB of internal memory, Apple is asking for a whopping 1829 euros for the most expensive model, the iPhone Pro Max with an impressive 1 TB of internal memory.

In terms of design, Apple has largely adopted the angular look of the iPhone 12 generation. In addition, there are some detail changes such as a smaller notch or the new arrangement of the rear camera, in which the lenses are no longer mounted one below the other, but diagonally. There is still no fingerprint sensor. Apple offers Polarstern, midnight, blue, rosé and the well-known (product) red as colors. The display measures 5.4 inches on the mini model and 6.1 inches on the iPhone 13. The refresh rate of the two “cheap” iPhones remains at 60 Hertz, and the manufacturer continues to rely on OLED as the technology.

All new Apple models are powered by the Apple A15 Bionic chipset. It is manufactured using the 5nm + process and is said to be more powerful than its predecessor. This also applies to the graphics performance, which is stated to be 30 percent higher. According to Apple, the more energy-efficient chip should also lead to overall better battery life for the iPhone 13 models. At first glance, everything looks the same with the camera, but there are important changes in the details. Apple is now using larger sensors and sensor shift for better focusing and stabilization, even in the two smallest iPhone 13 models. Both iPhone 13 Mini and iPhone 13 are available with 128, 256 and 512 GB of internal memory.

As with the iPhone 13, the display on the iPhone 13 Pro measures 6.1 inches, and on the Pro Max it is even 6.7 inches. What is new is the increased refresh rate of 120 Hertz, which was introduced for the first time in Apple models and is only available for the Pro models. The actual frame rate can be varied between 10 and 120 Hertz depending on the content of the display using Pro-Motion technology. In addition, thanks to energy-saving LTPO instead of the previous OLED technology, there is now an always-on display for the first time.

In addition to the camera innovations that have already been discussed for the inexpensive models, the Pro and Pro Max have received a new macro mode via the wide-angle camera, with which a subject can be zoomed in up to 2 millimeters – also in the video. In addition, the wide-angle has a more light-sensitive aperture of f / 1.8 and the night mode can now be used with all lenses. With the telephoto lens, users can now use a new portrait video mode that calculates live bokeh for videos in real time. In addition, a cinematic mode has been added, which enables direct editing of videos. Storage volumes of 128, 256 and 512 GB and 1 TB provide enough space for such videos. The colors available are graphite, gold, silver and sierra blue. All iPhone 13 models have been available for pre-order since September 17th and will hit stores on September 24th.

Android smartphones drop in price sooner or later, often quite quickly. One of the reasons: The comparatively short support period, even for top-quality products that are correspondingly expensive. In addition, there is simply a lot more choice, because numerous manufacturers produce Android smartphones. It’s different with Apple products. Only Apple itself produces iPhones with iOS as the operating system, so anyone who wants a smartphone like this cannot hope for competition.

This is still a problem when buying, but when reselling iPhone owners benefit from the comparatively high value of the devices. An iPhone 11 with 64 GB of memory initially cost 789 euros, the last price at the time of the article was 525 euros. This corresponds to a drop in prices of only around 33 percent – after a little over two years and now two new models. For comparison: A Samsung Galaxy S10 from the same year has fallen by around 50 percent to date.

In order to be able to estimate how the iPhone 13 and all its sibling models will develop in terms of price, we took a look at the iPhone 12 and its variants. We always looked at the smallest memory version in black, if available. The iPhone 12 Mini had the highest price drop, marking the negative leader after 3, 6 and 11 months. Almost a year after its presentation, it experienced a price drop of a little over 18 percent. The iPhone 12 follows in second place with just over 17 percent.

The Pro models proved to be significantly more stable in value. Both devices even increased by around 1 percent in the first month and maintained this value even after around 3 months. The Pro model then lost almost 13 percent in value after six months and was almost the same after 11 months with a loss of almost 13 percent. The price was most stable with the most expensive iPhone, the iPhone 12 Pro Max. Even after 3 months, the price was slightly above the initial level, but the “crash” after six months was only around 5.5 percent significantly lower than with the simple one Pro model. After 11 months, the price loss compared to the starting price was only 4.6 percent.

Since the cell phones are quite expensive, covers are recommended to protect the smartphones. In the guide cases for iPhone 13 & iPhone 13 Pro we present suitable accessories. In addition to the original cases from Apple, we also show cheaper alternatives.

The only real alternative to the new iPhone 13 models for Apple fans are only the previous devices. Interested parties save almost 20 percent with the non-pro models, with the pro models only just under 13 and 5 percent. Waiting is hardly worth it, especially with the iPhone 12 Pro models (test report) – if you want an iPhone, you also have to pay for an iPhone and dig deep into your pocket for it.

Once again, iPhone 13 enthusiasts shouldn’t bring much. The predecessor iPhone 12 with its variants brought a maximum saving of just over 18 percent within almost a year, with the most expensive model, the iPhone 12 Pro Max, it was only around 5 percent. Interested parties should rather grab it right away and buy an iPhone 13.

If you want to spend a little less money, you can opt for the predecessor iPhone 12, the difference in terms of appearance is already small. The Android warehouse has an even better price-performance ratio. There are already technically equivalent models for less than 500 euros. Our best list provides a good overview, up to around 300 euros, up to 400 euros and up to 500 euros.
