The President of Iran, Hasan Rohaní, declared this Wednesday during a meeting with members of his Government that the country could enrich uranium up to 90% purity, they report local media.
“The Atomic Energy Organization of Iran can enrich uranium to 20% and 60% and if one day our reactor needs it, it can produce uranium with a 90% purity, “the president pointed out. The 90% figure cited by the president, is considered the benchmark for nuclear weapons production.
At the same time, Rohaní pointed out that Iran’s adherence to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) manifested the fact that the Islamic Republic can resolve its main problems with the international community through dialogue. However, after the US withdrawal from this agreement, the country decided to try other solutions. He added that by leaving the JCPOA, the Trump Administration sought to cause Iran’s economy to collapse, but this goal did not come true.
The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), signed in 2015 by Iran and the 5 + 1 Group (UK, China, France, Russia, USA and Germany), stipulates the lifting of a series of sanctions against Tehran to changing its commitment not to develop or acquire nuclear weapons. The pact limits to 3.67% the fissile purity at which Iran can refine uranium. However, Tehran began increasing uranium enrichment beyond this limit after Donald Trump withdrew the US from the deal in 2018 and reimposed sanctions against the country.
