Kevin Costner took a huge gamble with his latest major box office effort, Horizon: An American Saga. Following the poor reception and flop at the box office, the legendary actor may lose his home. What’s the latest on this situation?
When it comes to Yellowstone and the upcoming conclusion of the beloved series, there will always be an asterisk next to it. After many years filling the boots of John Dutton in a way that only he could, Costner left the series, leaving a huge hole right at the finish line.
Things like Costner’s divorce, contract disputes, and scheduling conflicts have all been talked about as to why Kevin Costner left a role that was essentially tailor-made for him. From the looks of it, based on the most recent updates, the legendary actor may regret his decision to leave Dutton Ranch.
Since long before Dances With Wolves even made Kevin Costner a household name, the actor has always been one to blaze his own trail. He has even been asked over the years if he purposely seeks out the most difficult path, especially when there is one not quite as difficult that he could take.
Love him or hate him, Kevin Costner does his own thing, even when that means ruffling some feathers along the way. In the most recent instance, he put his all into his latest Western epic, Horizon: An American Saga. Even though this is a project very near and dear to his heart, bringing this project to life was a huge gamble. Based on the latest on this, it doesn’t seem to have paid off in the way that he hoped.
Even though Horizon: An American Saga is something that Kevin Costner has wanted to bring to the screen for decades, he took a huge gamble bringing his vision to life. Unfortunately for Costner, mass audiences don’t seem to be as enthusiastic about his project as he might have hoped.
Kevin Costner put a whopping $38M of his own money into funding his vision, and from the looks of it, it could cost him in a big way. The first part of this Horizon saga pulled in $11M during its opening weekend. When you consider that the production budget was $100M, that’s an expensive deficit.
Of course, it’s possible that the other parts of the saga may make up some of that moving forward, but, at least for now, there are some very real consequences coming from the actor’s gamble.
The actor previously told Deadline: “I’ve mortgaged 10 acres on the water in Santa Barbara where I was going to build my last house. But I did it without a thought. It has thrown my accountant into a f****** conniption fit. But it’s my life, and I believe in the idea and the story.”
Whether or not Costner ultimately ends up losing his home is still up in the air. However, depending on how the rest of his saga does, he may end up in considerable debt once everything is all said and done.
