Resolved doubt: Ikaris (Richard Madden) is dead at the end of Eternals
Kaz Firpo, writer of Eternals with his brother Ryan Firpo, has confirmed in a meeting with CBR that Ikaris, played by Richard Madden, dies at the end of the film. As much as it seemed evident from the way his collision with the sun is shown on screen, the ambiguity of the moment left viewers stunned, who until now wondered if they were truly ending their life in the MCU.
And so it is. When writing that scene, the objective of the Firpo was to give him a “final death” because he himself wanted to end everything. Regret and pain are some of the feelings that led Ikaris to bring about his end: “He cannot bear to face his family after what he has done. […] I don’t think Ikaris even thinks he’s wrong. I think he just regrets it. He is very sorry. He regrets the way he has lived his entire life on this planet, and that is a great burden to bear.“, Explain.
The scene in the making in which Ikaris addresses the sun gives off the following message, according to Firpo: “I cannot serve the Eternals. If I cannot serve the Celestials, and I cannot be with my family, then I choose this third option ”, which for him translates into I forget. “So yeah it’s dead”.
Looking to the future, the MCU will host the premiere of many films: Spider-Man: No Way Home on December 17; Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness on May 6, 2022; Thor: Love and Thunder on July 8, 2022; Black Panther: Wakanda Forever on November 11, 2022; The Marvels on February 23, 2023; Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 on May 23, 2023; and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania on July 28, 2023.
