James Cameron has hinted at a new project related to The Terminator universe but is keeping details under wraps for now.
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Cameron was asked about his thoughts on the upcoming Terminator anime series on Netflix. He shared, “I’m working on my own Terminator stuff right now. It’s got nothing to do with that.”
I’m working on my own Terminator stuff right now. It’s got nothing to do with that.
When pressed for more information, Cameron replied that the project is “totally classified,” adding humorously, “I don’t want to have to send out a potentially dangerous robotic agent if you were to talk about it, even retroactively.”
Cameron’s last significant contribution to the Terminator franchise, which he originally created by writing and directing the first movie in 1984, was co-writing and producing 2019’s Terminator: Dark Fate. This marked his first major involvement in the series since his work on Terminator 2: Judgment Day. He didn’t participate in writing, directing, or producing any of the intervening sequels.
Regarding the Terminator anime series, Cameron commented, “Terminator Zero looks interesting.”
He elaborated, “My relationship to that is very much like The Sarah Connor Chronicles—other people spinning stories in a world I set in motion is interesting to me. What’s their takeaway? What intrigued them about it? Where are they going with it?”
Cameron admitted he has “some curiosity” about how the new show will turn out, though he specified it’s “not a burning curiosity.” For fans, any new project in the Terminator series, especially one with Cameron’s involvement, is bound to spark significant interest.
Looking beyond The Terminator, Cameron’s next Avatar sequel, titled Avatar: Fire and Ash, is set to be released in theaters on December 19, 2025. On the anime front, Terminator Zero premieres on Netflix on August 29.
