It is no secret that the UCM was in relative order until series began to be produced that did not make it clear whether or not they were within said universe. We are referring to the pre-Disney Plus series. Now, James Gunn, director of Guardians of the Galaxy, has pointed out that these series do NOT count towards the UCM.
For those who do not know what series we are talking about, before Disney Plus there were several Marvel series (some VERY good) that did not finish making their site clear: Agentes of SHIELD is the main example. Many MCU theories and script holes have been covered by this series, however this refusal could change things.
Netflix also has The Defenders, which includes Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage e Iron Fist. In addition, we also saw The Punisher, a character who had his own series after stealing the spotlight from Daredevil in his own series. These series had minimal connection to the MCU, but the winks and clues seemed clear.
However, Gunn started a Twitter thread. about the actors that are included in the UCM and apparently everything that is before The Scarlet Witch and Vision (that is, pre-Disney Plus) does not count for this Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The director justifies it by saying that “there was never a coordination between the previous television material and the cinematic part of Marvel as there is now“.
And although there were entire seasons dedicated to the events that occur in the movies in series like Agents of SHIELD, the series and the movies never crossed. However, the series does explain some events that the movies left behind.
It seems that the only thing that enters the UCM in terms of series is everything produced as a result of Marvel Studios, Kevin Feige and Disney Plus. This would explain why Disney and Marvel have never used the Daredevil (Charlie Cox) Y The Punisher (Jon Bernthal) from the series, two highly acclaimed and fan-requested characters for the movies.
Meanwhile, Gunn prepares to premiere his version of The Suicide Squad before returning to the MCU to direct the third Guardians of the Galaxy film.
