CINCINNATI — The start of the Cincinnati Bengals’ season has sparked mixed feelings among players and fans alike. With an 0-2 record for the third consecutive year and the fifth time in the last six years, disappointment is palpable. However, the team also carries a sense of familiarity with these slow starts, which could prove beneficial as they prepare to face the Washington Commanders on Monday night.
Quarterback Joe Burrow expressed a measured perspective on the team’s situation during his weekly news conference. “We’re in a fine spot,” he remarked. “We’ve been here before. We’re not panicking. We’re focused on getting a win and getting better every day.” This mindset suggests a level of resilience among the players, even as they grapple with their early-season struggles.
Burrow reflected on the previous game against the Kansas City Chiefs, a narrow 26-25 loss. He noted the frustration that accompanied their near victory, especially given that Cincinnati had the lead in the fourth quarter. A pivotal defensive pass interference penalty ultimately allowed Kansas City to secure the game-winning field goal.
Interestingly, in four out of Burrow’s five NFL seasons, the Bengals have started with two losses. The only exception was in 2021 when they managed to defeat the Minnesota Vikings in overtime during their season opener. Since then, Burrow has faced a series of injuries at the beginning of the season, including a ruptured appendix in 2022, a calf injury in 2023, and wrist surgery in 2024.
Commenting on the upcoming game, Burrow emphasized the urgency the team feels to secure their first win. “We’ve treated every practice like it’s the same,” he said. “We pride ourselves on us not being able to tell if we win or lose. At practice, we’re going to go out and have fun and get our work in and get better.” This attitude might be the key for the Bengals as they attempt to shake off their rocky start.
Head coach Zac Taylor remains optimistic, noting that despite the rough start, the team does not seem to be feeling undue pressure. The loss to the New England Patriots in Week 1, despite being favorites by more than a touchdown, didn’t seem to create added tension. “I’ve never felt that from the players,” Taylor shared, highlighting the team’s calm approach to challenging situations. “I feel this is a very comfortable team that understands how to work,” he continued.
On a positive note, the Bengals received some encouraging news as wide receiver Tee Higgins returned to practice after missing the first two games due to a hamstring injury. Although he was a limited participant, his return could provide a much-needed boost to the offense. Taylor indicated that the team would closely monitor Higgins’s progress throughout the week, hoping that he can be ready for the game.
Burrow acknowledged the significance of Higgins’s presence on the field, stating, “Hopefully we have him on Sunday. If we don’t, we still feel confident in the guys that we have. We’re obviously more dynamic and a much better team with Tee out there.” This belief in the team’s depth and talent will be crucial as they prepare to confront the Commanders.
As Cincinnati gears up for their next matchup, the focus remains on finding their first win of the season. The experiences of previous years may offer valuable lessons, and the players appear determined to turn the tide. With a blend of preparation, confidence, and a touch of urgency, the Bengals aim to shift their fortunes and provide their fans with the victory they seek.
