Joel Embiid, the standout center for the Philadelphia 76ers, has officially signed a three-year contract extension worth $192.9 million. This information comes from a source familiar with the situation, who preferred to remain anonymous due to the confidential nature of the contract details.
Embiid, who was named the NBA MVP for the 2022-23 season, is now locked into a deal with the Sixers that extends his total contract value to over $300 million for the next five years. Although the team confirmed the signing, they did not disclose specific financial terms.
In a statement, Sixers owner Josh Harris expressed excitement about the extension, saying, “Joel has cemented himself as one of the greatest Sixers of all time and is well on his way to being one of the best players to ever play the game. We’re ecstatic that this extension keeps him and his family in Philadelphia for years to come.” Harris further praised Embiid as a family man and a leader, highlighting his immense talent and importance to the franchise’s championship aspirations.
Last season, Embiid made his seventh consecutive All-Star appearance, showcasing his skills as one of the league’s elite players. However, he faced challenges with injuries, playing in only 39 games after winning the MVP award and earning his fifth All-NBA honor. Despite this, he contributed significantly during the season, averaging an impressive 34.7 points, 11 rebounds, 5.6 assists, 1.7 blocks, and 1.2 steals while shooting 52.9% from the field. He also achieved a milestone by winning a gold medal with the U.S. team at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
In his own words, Embiid expressed his desire to remain in Philadelphia for the duration of his career. “I started as a Sixer and want to be right here for the rest of my career. I had no idea when I was drafted as a 20-year-old kid from Cameroon how lucky I was to be in Philadelphia,” he stated. He went on to share his gratitude for the support he has received from the city and fans throughout his journey, stating, “Through all the ups and downs, this city and the fans have been everything, and I am so grateful for how they’ve embraced me. I want to thank Josh, (co-owner) David (Blitzer), and the entire organization. Philadelphia is home and it’s time to bring this community an NBA championship.”
The 76ers are focused on their championship goals, although they have not reached the conference finals since their appearance in the 2001 NBA Finals. This offseason, the team has also extended All-Star guard Tyrese Maxey and made a significant move in free agency by acquiring Paul George.
With a fully fit Embiid, the 76ers are poised to contend with strong teams in the Eastern Conference, including Boston, New York, and Cleveland, as they aim for a successful season ahead.
