ATLANTA — Justin Fields may not have convinced Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin to hand him the starting quarterback position, but he certainly raised expectations during his recent performance. Stepping in for an injured Russell Wilson, Fields secured a debut victory with the Steelers, leading the team to an 18-10 win against the Atlanta Falcons.
While Fields did not throw a single touchdown pass and managed only 156 yards through the air, he played a critical role in the victory. Moreover, he avoided crucial mistakes and did not turn the ball over. His focus was sharp, emphasizing his arrival with purpose. “I came here to win, no matter if I was going to throw for 300 yards, 100 yards, or no yards,” Fields stated confidently. “I came here to win.”
The Steelers showed a familiar formula for success on a day that mirrored challenges they faced in the previous year. T.J. Watt and the Steelers defense were formidable, securing three turnovers and two sacks against the Falcons’ offense, which was helmed by Kirk Cousins in his debut with the team. Kicker Chris Boswell contributed significantly by scoring all the team’s points through six successful field goals, three of which were from beyond 50 yards. Additionally, the running game found some momentum, led by Najee Harris, who rushed for 70 yards.
With a young backup quarterback at the helm, such support is crucial. The match held additional significance for Fields, who hails from Kennesaw, Georgia, just 30 miles from the stadium. This connection meant a large turnout of family, friends, and former teammates to support him. Despite uncertainty about starting until just before the warmups, the atmosphere felt like home, particularly with a strong contingent of Steelers fans present.
Wilson had aggravated a calf injury earlier in the week, casting doubt on his availability. Initially, he arrived at the stadium hoping to play after securing the starting role in training camp. However, as Tomlin noted, the decision to start Fields became apparent. “I’d rather deal with short-term misery, to be quite honest with you,” he explained. “There’s a lot of ball out in front of us. I just thought it was appropriate to put healthy guys out on the field.” He further elaborated on his view of the two quarterbacks: “I felt pretty good about both quarterbacks,” acknowledging the situation created by Wilson’s physical condition.
While Tomlin has been cautious in dismissing any emerging quarterback controversy, particularly given Fields’ impressive performances during training camp, the stakes are now higher with games that truly matter. When asked if Fields’ performance would influence Wilson’s status as the starter, Tomlin responded curtly, “You can ask me that on Tuesday.”
As much as Tomlin might want to quell any speculation, the interest in Fields’ performance remains intense, especially if he continues to provide reasons for discussion. Fields has an opportunity to bolster his case with his dynamic play style, utilizing his mobility to escape pressure and gain yardage. He recorded 57 rushing yards on 14 attempts, further demonstrating his versatility. Additionally, Fields connected with George Pickens on a significant play, hitting him for a 40-yard completion seconds before halftime, which set up a field goal.
Despite the intense competition for the starting role, Fields has chosen not to indulge in any self-promotion or controversy. Since Wilson was named the starter, Fields has maintained a professional demeanor. “To be honest, I’m not even going to worry about that,” he mentioned regarding the starting role. “All I want to do is win at the end of the day.” He emphasized his commitment to the team’s success over individual recognition.
Interestingly, Fields revealed that it was Wilson who informed him of his starting role after warmups, highlighting the supportive dynamic between them. “I always have to be ready,” he asserted. “I’ve been in this position before. Anything can happen. I just always have the mindset to be ready.”
The season ahead is long, and the potential for quarterback controversies can often complicate matters. Ultimately, performance will dictate the future. Uncertainty lingers over Wilson’s recovery as the Steelers approach their next matchup—a trip to Denver. After being released by the Broncos despite an expensive contract, Wilson may find himself facing his former team, adding another layer to the unfolding narrative.
Regardless of how the quarterback situation plays out, the Steelers have demonstrated that they are prepared for whatever challenges may arise.
