Justine Triet Wins Palme d’Or at Cannes Film Festival 2023
Justine Triet has made history by becoming the third woman to win the Palme d’Or at Cannes Film Festival. The director won the prestigious award for her thought-provoking legal drama, Anatomy of a Fall. The film investigates the guilt or innocence of a popular novelist named Sandra who has been accused of murdering her husband, bringing private details of their personal lives into the courtroom for scrutiny.
Anatomy of a Fall
Anatomy of a Fall, co-written by Justine Triet and Arthur Harari, features actress Sandra Hüller as the lead character, Sandra. Prior to her Cannes outing, Triet earned a César Award nomination for Best First Feature for Age of Panic (2013) and three years later, a nomination for Best Film for In Bed With Victoria.
Triet began her career in documentaries, working as a director of photography and editor. In 2012, she began to earn a place at prestigious festivals such as those held in Berlin, where she has been a finalist and has won an award in one of the categories dedicated to short films.
Palme Dog Award
The winning film of the 76th edition of the Cannes Film Festival, Anatomy of a Fall, was also recognized with the Palm Dog award, which is given to canine performances in films.
Female Directors at Cannes
Justine Triet joins the ranks of female directors who have won the Palme d’Or at Cannes, including Jane Campion for The Piano (1993) and Julia Ducournau for Titane (2021). However, the fact that it took until 1955 for a woman to win the award at Cannes suggests that very little progress has been made in the past decades.
The 76th edition of the Cannes Film Festival saw surprises like the appearance of Harrison Ford and the arrival of K-pop stars on the red carpet. However, it was the triumph of Justine Triet that was the finishing touch for the event, as she became the third woman to win the Palme d’Or at Cannes. Anatomy of a Fall is set to premiere on August 23 in France and has already been acquired for distribution in North America.
