Juventus’ disappointing season (BIT:JUVE) continued on Thursday with the draw to one against Nantes in the first leg of the knockout phase of the Europa League.
Juventus only won one of the six Champions League group stage matches, so they are now in the Europa League qualifiers. In addition, its fans have had to endure a terrible campaign after being deducted 15 points in the Italian Serie A for financial irregularities.
The qualifiers are a relief for the Turinese, who faced Nantes, thirteenth in the French Ligue 1. The hosts went ahead early on the scoreboard, when Serbian striker Dusan Vlahovic finished off a cross header from Federico Chiesa into the net.
Chiesa was unlucky not to double his team’s lead early in the second half, after his powerful shot hit the bottom of the crossbar, bounced off the goal line and went outside.
However, Nantes took advantage of the disadvantage to equalize at the hour mark, with a goal from Ludovic Blas after a quick counterattack.
Meanwhile, six-time Europa League champions Sevilla beat PSV Eindhoven 3-0 with goals from Youssef En Nesyri, Lucas Ocampos and Nemanja Gudelj.
Sevilla, who are going through a difficult season after being eliminated from the Champions League and having won just six games in all competitions, delivered an impressive performance in their favourite competition.
In Lisbon, Portuguese league champions Sporting had to come back to draw 1-1 at home with Danish side Midtjylland.
Monaco captain Axel Disasi scored a goal in added time that gave his team a 3-2 win at Bayer (ETR:BAYGN) Leverkusen in the first leg.
