Lady Gaga's Transformation into Harley Quinn for 'Joker: Folie a Deux' Revealed

Singer Lady Gaga will be heading into the superhero realm next year when she plays the iconic Harley Quinn in Joker: Folie a Deux, and she employed a rather interesting technique on the set. The 37-year-old singer (born Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta) – who recently had a lawsuit thrown out over her dog-napping incident – made her feature film debut in 2018’s A Star Is Born, which she followed up with 2021’s House of Gucci. She joins Oscar-winning actor Joaquin Phoenix in the highly-anticipated Joker: Folie a Deux, in theaters October 4, 2024, though cinematographer Larry Sher revealed on The Trenches TV podcast that, on the set, she wanted to be called, ‘Lee.’

She also served as the cinematographer on the 2019 Joker movie that landed Phoenix his Best Actor Oscar, confirming that he was, ‘100% in character all the time.’ He added that on the second day of filming, Phoenix approached him and apologized, ‘for being whatever like weird, I just need to stay (in character).’ Lady Gaga was spotted in New York City Saturday filming for her role as Harley Quinn in the upcoming sequel ‘Joker: Folie à Deux.’ In the scene, the award-winning entertainer, whose real name is Stefani Germanotta, was filmed on the steps of the New York County Supreme Court in downtown Manhattan.

She was flanked by troops of cops, amidst a crowd of people. Many of them were seen carrying picket signs like ‘Free Joker.’ Gaga, 36, wore a bright red blazer and underneath it was a top with the familiar black-and-white diamonds that are a trademark of Quinn’s usual costume. The wardrobe also included a black leather mini-skirt and black stockings adorned with diamond shapes.

The sequel to the critically acclaimed ‘The Joker’ is being directed by Todd Phillips, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Scott Silver. Quinn is a character that was originally created as comic relief for the villainous Joker. Gaga was surrounded by hundreds of extras while filming. Her origin story is that she was a psychiatrist at Gotham City’s Arkham Asylum and went by the name Dr. Harleen Quinzel. In the comic books, she develops a relationship with one of her patients, the Joker, and eventually becomes his accomplice and lover.

Gaga is not the first actress to play the shrink-turned-villainess. Margot Robbie played Quinn in the 2020 film, ‘Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey.’ Joaquin Phoenix is once again reprising his role as Arthur Fleck and The Joker in the sequel with Gaga, along with Zazie Beetz, who will again be playing Sophie Dumond. Brendan Gleeson and Catherine Keener have been cast in undisclosed roles. Gaga, who most recently performed at the 2023 Oscars ceremony, first appeared onscreen in 2013’s ‘Machete Kills.’ She then gained rave reviews and an Academy Award nomination for her role in the 2018 film ‘A Star is Born’ and followed that up with a turn in ‘House of Gucci.’ ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ is set to be released in October 2024.
