LeBron James becomes the leading scorer in NBA history

Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James surpassed Kareem Abdul-Jabbar on Tuesday to become the NBA’s all-time leading scorer by setting the new mark with a layup late in the third quarter of a home game against the Oklahoma City Thunder.

James, who needed 36 points to beat Abdul-Jabbar’s record (38,387), provoked the delirium of the crowd, which filled the stands, when the pitch went in, engraving his name in the history books.

Abdul-Jabbar, the legendary Lakers player who snatched the title from Wilt Chamberlain with his trademark hook on April 5, 1984, was sitting by the court at Tuesday’s game.

The game was halted to acknowledge the achievement and allow James to address the audience.

“I just want to say thank you to the Lakers faithful, you’re unique,” James said.

“To be able to be in the presence of a legend like Kareem is incredible, it makes me feel very honored. Please give ‘El Capitan’ a standing ovation.”
