Blink-182 Rocks Coachella

It had all the makings of a headline performance: the reunion of a beloved band, a hit-packed discography, and thousands of fans singing their hearts out. And yet Blink-182’s highly anticipated set filled the afternoon slot on a stage too small… which made it even better.

Last Minute Addition

On Thursday night (April 13), when Coachella finally revealed the show’s weekend times on Instagram, the caption read: “the jacket”. Fans of the band knew right away that it was good news that Blink had joined the lineup at the last minute.

In October, the legendary pop-punk band announced that they would be reuniting with their original lineup of Mark Hoppus, Travis Barker and Tom Delonge. On Friday (April 14), they gave their first show together since.

The Show

The band appeared, appropriately, with the Star Wars theme song and selected “Family Reunion” as their celebratory opening song. As DeLonge enjoyed the crowd’s outcry for his return to the band, he couldn’t help but smile as he raised his middle finger, then told the crowd how much he loved them.

After performing “Anthem, Part Two,” Hoppus said something very simple but shocking: “Hello, we are Blink-182… Welcome to Coachella 2023”.

The Youthful Humor

That the 1990s-formed outfit is as strong today as it was during its heyday is a testament to its catalog and staying power, particularly at a time when pop-punk is back in force. And in the case of Blink, the band brought their youthful sense of humor to bear, with Hoppus and DeLonge cracking jokes on everything from UTIs to testicles.

As Barker’s wife, Kourtney Kardashian-Barker, watched from onstage, the band performed hits like “Rock Show,” “Feelin This,” and “What’s My Age Again,” garnering Guinness World Record-worthy choruses from the crowd as a pot was brewed.

Epic Close

Minutes after the scheduled closing time, Hoppus noted that the band had overplayed and weren’t going to stop. He said there were three more songs to go and that, naturally, they were some of his biggest hits to date.

In this way, they closed with the epic triplet “I Miss You,” “All the Small Things,” and “Dammit,” for which Hoppus interpolated a bit of TLC’s “No Scrubs” for good measure.

But it was the Instagram post by Hoppus which summed up the experience better than any song. “From chemo to Coachella,” he captioned a photo of himself on stage in front of an empty field that would soon be filled with fans. “Grateful to be here and excited to play a rock show with my friends tonight.”
