The president of FC Barcelona, Joan Laporta, explains this Friday the reasons for the departure of Lionel Messi, a day after the club announced that its greatest legend will not remain with the team next season.
In a statement this Thursday, Barça indicated that there was a “clear intention on both sides” to sign a new contract for Messi’s permanence in the team, but there was “economic and structural obstacles“, in particular by the regulations of the Spanish La Liga.
Messi officially became a free agent on July 1. After the rumors of a few months ago about a possible departure of the club, the two parties had reached an agreement on the renewal of the ‘Ten’, after the forward accepted a significant salary reduction, close to 50%. However, the economic situation of FC Barcelona is critical, and it is estimated that it has a gross debt of more than 1,000 million euros, about 1,183 million dollars.
This Thursday, the board of directors of the Catalan club said goodbye to Messi: “Barça would like to thank with all its heart the player’s contribution to the enhancement of the institution and wish him the best in his personal and professional life.”
Messi joined Barcelona’s youth ranks in December 2000. Almost four years later, on October 16, 2004, the 17-year-old Argentine striker made his first-team debut in a match against the city’s archrival Espanyol.
From that moment, the footballer born in the city of Rosario became a huge legend in his 17-year professional career, which includes 35 trophies raised.
The fans culés will never forget that Messi got 10 League trophies; 4 European Champions Leagues; 7 King’s Cups; 3 Club World Cups; 8 trophies from the Spanish Super Cup; among other honors.
In his 778 official matches, Messi scored 672 goals and provided 288 assists, becoming the best player in the history of FC Barcelona.
Not only the Catalan club loses with the departure of Messi, also the Spanish League. The various rumors suggest that few teams could pay the Argentine star his juicy salary. The forward has been linked to Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) of the French league; with Manchester City and Manchester United, both from England.
In the following weeks the next destiny of the 34-year-old player who changed the history of FC Barcelona will be known.
