Lizzo has made a generous donation to two nonprofits after U.S. lawmakers made abortion illegal in the country.
The ‘About Damn Time’ singer’s donation has been matched by live show promoters Live Nation, raising a million dollars to help Planned Parenthood and Abortion Rights, two nonprofits, which provide vital reproductive health services.
The 34-year-old singer made the announcement of her generosity on Instagram: “I pledge to donate $500,000 from my upcoming tour to Planned Parenthood and Abortion Rights. Live Nation agreed to match – to make it $1 MILLION. The most important thing is action and loud voices. @plannedparenthood @abortionfunds and organizations like them will need funding to continue offering services to the people most harmed by this ban,” the super artist wrote.
She continued, “Black and black women have historically had disproportionately less access to family planning resources — this is a big loss but it’s not new.”
The Grammy winner also encouraged her fans to donate and sign the Bans Off My Body petition, organized by Planned Parenthood as “a rallying cry for autonomy and equality.”
The Supreme Court’s decision to end the constitutional right to abortion in the United States has sparked outrage around the world.
U.S. President Joe Biden called the sentence “un-American” in a speech from the White House, adding that it was a “sad day for the court and the country” and calling the move “wrong, extreme and out of place.”
