MacBook Pro 2021 does not charge properly: Apple is investigating problem reports

Apple’s new charging technology may go on strike. When charging the 16 “MacBook Pro, the charging process may be interrupted if the notebook has been shut down completely. The problem can only be observed if Apple’s new 140-watt power supply and the also new MagSafe-3 connector are used for charging is used, as several users report. The status lamp of the plug flashes orange and the device does not seem to be drawing any power.

If you start up the MacBook again, charging also works as usual. According to reports from those affected, it is also possible to switch to another power supply or charging via USB-C, which is also possible. It can be difficult if the MacBook Pro shuts down after the battery has run empty – and no other power supply than the one supplied is at hand.

The manufacturer’s support staff seem to be partially aware of the charging problem by now, as reported by a user on Reddit. Apple knows about the error pattern and is currently investigating it. We recommend charging the MacBook Pro 2021 when it is actively used and in hibernation. If it should also be charged when switched off, the MagSafe cable must be plugged in before shutting down.

It can also help to boot the Mac into recovery mode and then shut down the computer from there, the support says – but that only temporarily eliminated the loading error.

How widespread the bug is remains unclear. Other users report that their MacBook Pro can still be charged normally via MagSafe even after shutdown. Apple has made charging the MacBook Pro 2021 particularly flexible: for the first time, it can be charged both via the MagSafe port and via USB-C. The new fast charging function can only be used on the 16 “MacBook Pro with the 140-watt power supply unit and the MagSafe-3 cable; on the smaller 14” model, “Fast Charging” also works via USB-C if you have at least a 94- Watt power supply used for this.
