The filmmaker has participated extensively with Upright Citizens Brigade Theater in New York and Improv Olympics West in Los Angeles. 

She co-wrote and contributed sketches to four “Lady Refs” episodes of Funny or Die in 2011. The focus was on certain female referees who officiated young football games. As a director and screenwriter, she has also produced a low-budget sex comedy.

2013 saw the debut of her To-Do-List production, which featured a developing main character. The story follows a young woman’s summer in Boise in the 1990s as she goes through typical growing-up experiences and prepares for all the sexual encounters that will come her way. It is similar to a coming-of-age story. In actuality, it was Maggie’s autobiography. It’s vital to mention that Bill Hader, her former husband, portrayed the part. 

The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt is one of the television programs for which Maggie Carey has written as a guest contributor. She contributed to one episode of the HBO series Silicon Valley in 2014.
