A 47-year-old man from Massachusetts has been charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon after a shooting incident during a pro-Israel demonstration in Newton, according to law enforcement officials on Thursday night.
The individual who was shot sustained life-threatening injuries and is currently receiving treatment at a local hospital, as confirmed in a brief news conference by authorities.
The altercation occurred around 6:40 p.m. ET when Newton Police arrived in response to reports at the intersection of Washington and Harvard Street. At that time, a small group was participating in a pro-Israeli demonstration on one side of the street, reported Middlesex County District Attorney Marian Ryan.
According to Ryan, a man who was not associated with the demonstration was walking on the opposite side of the street. Words were exchanged between him and the demonstrators, indicating rising tensions.
This individual then crossed the street, returned to his original side, and subsequently crossed back again. He eventually engaged one of the demonstrators in a physical confrontation, leading to what was described as a scuffle.
During this confrontation, the demonstrator allegedly fired a shot, striking the man who had crossed the street. The alleged shooter, now in police custody, has been charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, as well as violation of a constitutional right causing injury, according to Ryan’s statements.
The accused is set to appear in the Newton District Court for his arraignment on Friday.
Authorities have indicated that this investigation is still in its early stages and remains active as more details are being uncovered.
As the situation continues to develop, additional updates will follow.
