With more than 89 million units sold, Nintendo Switch surpassed the sales of both Xbox 360 and PS3 and became the 7th best selling game console in the world.
Nintendo’s latest financial report Switch sales figures announced as part of Nintendo Switch show that the new console comes very close to the sales of Nintendo’s incredibly successful console, the Nintendo Wii (101.63 million units). Nintendo hopes to sell 20.5 million more consoles in the current fiscal year (ending March 2022).
The Xbox 360, whose production ended, sold 86 million units in total, while the PS3 managed to sell 87.4 million units. Of course, Nintendo’s ultimate goal will be to break the PS2 record as the best-selling console of all time, but Nintendo still has a long way to go before it hits the PS2 record selling 155 million units in total.
Nintendo’s falling sales
The news actually comes with a year-over-year performance drop for Nintendo. The company sold 4.45 million Switch units in the first quarter of the fiscal year, down 21.7% year on year. Interestingly, sales of the base Switch consoles increased compared to the first quarter of last year, while sales of the Switch Lite fell sharply.
The Switch reached approximately $2.94 billion in net sales this year (down 9.9% from the same period last year) and net profit fell to approximately $846 million (down 12.9%). Game sales played an important role in this decline. Pokémon Snap, the best-selling game of the first quarter of 2021 with 2.07 million units, seems rather unsuccessful when compared to Animal Crossing: New Horizons, which sold 10.6 million copies in the first quarter of 2020. Also, Mittopia and Mario Golf: Super Rush have only sold 1 million copies since its release.
