Gal Gadot Almost Casted as Barbie in Upcoming Film

In anticipation of the upcoming “Barbie” movie, Margot Robbie, the star and co-producer of the film, revealed in a recent interview that Gal Gadot was initially their top choice for the titular role. But due to unavailability, Gadot instead served as an inspiration for Robbie and Greta Gerwig in their casting decisions.

“Gal Gadot is the energy of Barbie,” said Robbie. “Because Gal Gadot is so unbelievably beautiful, but you don’t hate her for being because she’s so genuinely sincere and so enthusiastically kind, it’s almost ridiculous. It’s like right before being a fool.”

Robbie also shared her thoughts on portraying a character like Barbie, who has been a cultural icon for over 60 years.

Dealing with Barbie’s Sexualized Nature

In the same interview, Robbie addressed the issue of Barbie’s sexualized nature, stating that she “should never be sexy.”

“People can project sex onto her. Yes, she can wear a short skirt, but because it’s fun and pink. Not because she wants you to see her butt,” Robbie explained. “Barbie is a plastic doll. She doesn’t have organs. If she doesn’t have reproductive organs, would she feel sexual desire? No, I don’t think I could.”

Honoring Barbie’s Legacy

Robbie also talked about her pitch to Mattel, the toy company that owns Barbie, and her desire to honor the brand’s legacy while recognizing the complex feelings some people have towards the doll.

“We have to find a way to recognize that,” Robbie said. “But we have to recognize that there are a lot of people who are not fans of Barbie. And, in fact, they are not just indifferent to Barbie. They actively hate Barbie. We have to find a way to recognize that.”

Film Release Date

“Barbie” is set to hit theaters on July 21 and is distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, which is owned by the same corporation as CNN, Warner Bros. Discovery.

The opening credits of the released trailer make an interesting promise: “If you love Barbie, this movie is for you. If you hate Barbie, this movie is for you.”
