Mariah Carey has opened up about the difficult weeks she has faced following the tragic deaths of her mother, Patricia, and her sister, Alison, who both passed away on the same day.
On September 8, the iconic singer shared her reflections in an Instagram post, stating, “Back at work. It’s been a couple of rough weeks.”
In the post, Carey expressed her gratitude for the love and support she has received, sharing that she is eager to perform for her fans in China and Brazil. She accompanied her message with a heartfelt rendition of her song “It’s Like That,” showing a more vulnerable side of herself.
Carey first revealed the painful news regarding her family in late August, requesting privacy as she grieved. In her announcement, she explained the heartbreak of losing both her mother and sister in such close succession.
She has upcoming performances scheduled for September 15 and 16 in China, followed by shows in Brazil on September 20 and 22. In a separate video post, she dedicated her song “I Wish You Knew” to her fans in those countries, sharing her excitement to reunite with them.
Following the tragic events on August 26, Carey expressed her profound sorrow in her statement, saying, “My heart is broken that I’ve lost my mother this past weekend. Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day.”
She reflected on her time with her mother before her death, saying, “I feel blessed that I was able to spend the last week with my mom before she passed.” Carey also thanked her supporters for their understanding during this incredibly difficult time.
Throughout her career, Mariah Carey has been open about her complicated relationships with her mother and sister. In her memoir, “The Meaning of Mariah Carey,” published in 2020, she shared her struggles, stating that her relationship with her mother had been a source of “pain and confusion.”
She revealed that her therapist advised her to reframe her family dynamics, leading her to rename her family members in her mind—referring to her mother simply as “Pat,” her brother as “Morgan,” and her sister as “Alison.” This exercise was aimed at helping her let go of unrealistic expectations regarding her family relationships.
David Baker, a patient advocate who knew Alison, commented on her character, noting that she was “a highly intelligent, very sensitive person,” and described her rapid decline in health. Baker recognized the signs leading up to her passing, stating, “We saw it coming, but it’s still a shock. She got ill fairly quickly, and a month later, she’s gone.”
Morgan, Carey’s brother, also shared his sentiments after the loss of their mother and sister. He expressed his sorrow by stating, “I’m praying for them and hope they are finally at peace. We were five, and now we are two.”
During this challenging time, Mariah Carey remains committed to her music and her fans, finding solace in her art while navigating the complexities of her grief. Her journey showcases both her resilience and the importance of community support during times of loss.
