Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro Arrive at Cannes to Present Killers of the Flower Moon
The 76th edition of the Cannes International Film Festival was abuzz with excitement as Martin Scorsese and his longtime friend Robert De Niro arrived on the red carpet to present their latest film, Killers of the Flower Moon. The press room was packed with journalists from around the world, all eager to catch a glimpse of the legendary director and his cast.
Although only a select few were able to have direct contact with Scorsese, De Niro, Leonardo DiCaprio, Lily Gladstone and Chief Standing Bear, the presentation function of the film had a star-studded list of attendees, including Cate Blanchett, Salma Hayek, and Robbie Williams.
Leonardo DiCaprio spoke of his gratitude towards Scorsese, stating that his filmmaking had influenced his own performances. He also added Scorsese’s talent transformed a whole generation of actors.
Scorsese’s return to Cannes after 35 years was highly anticipated. Killers of the Flower Moon was not in competition, but its showing at the festival was one that commanded attention.
Robert De Niro also spoke candidly about how the film serves to explain the United States of today, given its dark plot with which it was orchestrated the massacre of the Osage tribe in the 1920s. The discovery of an oil reserve on the Osage Indian Reservation was the motive for the gruesome crime.
De Niro spoke out against Donald Trump and systemic racism, urging people to be aware of the “banality of evil” that still exists in society. The press conference also touched on politics, and Scorsese expressed the importance of freedom of speech.
Despite the short time allotted for the press conference, there was a feeling among the journalists that many questions were left unanswered. However, it is never enough when one is in the presence of a genius like Scorsese.
