Marvel: the reason why TVA uses old technology in “Loki” – MRT

The first episode of Loki, the exclusive Marvel series for the Disney Plus platform, has drawn the attention of the community due to the many visual details when it comes to presenting the Agency for Temporal Variation, an organization that needs Loki’s help to stop the evil variant of another Loki.

While the Temporal Variation Agency has many high-tech items, their design is reminiscent of old gadgets from the 1960s and 1950s. Why is this? Why does Marvel’s fictional organization have vintage gadgets that are capable of such amazing tasks?

The key is in the same reason that the Agency for Temporal Variation exists. As it is an organization that works “outside of time”, its articles are not exactly from the future or the past. Loki’s director Kate Herron explained this design in more detail in an interview with Screen Rant.

“I worked as a temp in many offices and as a medical secretary for the NHS. I remember that some of the technology that I’m using would be really archaic and old, and I thought, ‘Oh, this needs to be updated. But I love the idea that this all-powerful organization that basically controls our destiny may not have the most up-to-date technology. It may not seem super futuristic, because they are not necessarily in the future or necessarily in the past. They are completely out of it, because it is TVA. It was really fun. I think by bringing that retro futuristic vibe in that sense to the technology, it felt a little old, but it also had a twist that felt a little different, “explained the Marvel filmmaker.

LOKI | Inspired by movie classics

Michael Waldron, the scriptwriter for Loki, added that the visual art is inspired by films such as Metropolis, Blade Runner and Mad Men, precisely for the design of the offices.

The second episode of Loki will be available on Disney Plus starting this Wednesday, June 16, 2021.
