NEW YORK — Mayor Eric Adams of New York City has been indicted following a federal investigation, according to sources reported by CBS News New York. This significant development follows a series of investigations concerning Adams and certain members of his administration.
The inquiries began in November 2023 and escalated recently with an influx of subpoenas. As a mayor who has had to navigate these challenging situations, Adams issued a statement in response to the indictment on Wednesday night.
“I always knew that if I stood my ground for New Yorkers, I would become a target — and indeed, I have,” Adams remarked. “If I am charged, I am innocent, and I will fight this with every ounce of my strength and spirit.”
When asked whether he planned to resign, Adams firmly rejected the idea. “I’m stepping up, not stepping down,” he asserted on Tuesday. “I have a city to run.” He also expressed eagerness regarding his anticipated re-election campaign, emphasizing his commitment to serve another term.
A spokesperson for Adams confirmed that they expect all involved team members to fully cooperate with any ongoing inquiries into the administration.
The federal investigations encompass various aspects of Adams’ administration, particularly focusing on his campaign fundraising efforts. Authorities have scrutinized donations made to Adams’ 2021 mayoral campaign by individuals connected to the Turkish government. This inquiry commenced in November 2023, coinciding with a raid on the home of Adams’ chief fundraiser, Brianna Suggs. During the time of the raid, Adams was attending a meeting in Washington D.C., addressing the ongoing migrant crisis but returned to New York City as soon as he learned about the raids involving Suggs and others.
Since then, the investigation appears to have broadened. Recent subpoenas, issued to Adams’ legal team in July, reportedly requested information related not only to Turkey’s involvements but also dealings with countries such as Israel, China, Qatar, South Korea, and Uzbekistan. In light of these developments, Adams stated that as mayor, he has only traveled to Israel and Qatar.
The investigation’s central concern revolves around allegations that straw donors from Turkey may have wrongfully contributed to Adams’ campaign. Specifically, employees from a Brooklyn construction firm have allegedly made contributions, yet some of them reported not recalling their donations when questioned.
Additional line of inquiry includes whether there was any undue pressure on the Fire Department of New York (FDNY) to approve the establishment of a new Turkish consulate in Midtown, despite existing safety concerns. Investigators are also examining if Adams received complimentary flights or upgrades on Turkish Airlines.
Other investigations surrounding his administration are noteworthy as well. Former NYPD Commissioner Edward Caban resigned after it was revealed that federal agents had raided his home and seized his phone. The investigation is reportedly linked to his twin brother, James Caban, who is suspected of facilitating issues between nightclubs and the NYPD. Allegations state that James Caban aided establishments in resolving complaints related to noise and other matters requiring police attention.
In response to the scrutiny, James Caban’s attorney has defended that having a former NYPD officer act as a liaison between the police and nightclubs is appropriate and lawful.
Additionally, federal authorities have conducted operations at the residences of Deputy Mayor for Public Safety Philip Banks and his brother, Schools Chancellor David Banks. They also raided the home of First Deputy Mayor Sheena Wright. When agents raided their homes, their devices were confiscated. Following the investigation, David Banks announced his retirement, stating he had informed Adams about his plans prior to the raid.
Another figures under scrutiny is Terence Banks, a brother of Philip and David, who operates a consulting agency called Pearl Alliance. His business caters to numerous companies with contracts to New York City agencies, although he is not a registered lobbyist.
As the investigation unfolds, significant questions remain regarding the future implications for Adams and his administration. The outcomes of these inquiries could greatly impact both Adams’ political career and the functioning of his team moving forward.
