At their August 9 show in Inglewood, California, Megadeth brought the deep cut “Liar” from their album So Far, So Good… So What! back to the stage for the first time in 18 years.
The thrash metal legends did not stop there; they played “Liar” again the following night, suggesting the song might remain part of their set list for the foreseeable future.
Before these recent performances, “Liar” was quite the rarity. In the 21st century, it was only played eight times. Apart from their 1988 tour supporting their third record, Megadeth never performed the song live more than nine times in any given year.
“Liar” is famously about ex-Megadeth guitarist Chris Poland, who contributed to the group’s first two albums. Poland has also played live with Kings of Thrash, a band formed by former Megadeth members David Ellefson and Jeff Young.
Introducing the song, Dave Mustaine engaged the audience, asking, “Would you like us to play a song that we haven’t played in about 20 years?”

In a 2022 interview with The Metal Voice, Chris Poland reminisced about his life immediately after being dismissed from the band in 1987.
“I was bussing tables from midnight to 8AM,” Poland recalled. “On weekends, someone would recognize me and say, ‘Dude, you’re Chris Poland!’ and I’d have to reply, ‘Yeah, I am.’ It was strange because they’d look at me, puzzled, and ask, ‘Dude, what the fuck are you doing here?’ And I would just say, ‘Hey, man, I’ve gotta eat. I’ve gotta pay the rent.’”
Reflecting further, Poland noted, “When you think of it now, it seems pretty crazy. At that time, Megadeth was beyond gold – Peace Sells was really like a train. And there I was, bussing tables in the middle of the night at Denny’s.”
Megadeth is currently on a U.S. tour alongside Mudvayne and All That Remains, which will conclude on September 28.
