The Menendez brothers have expressed strong disapproval of Ryan Murphy’s new Netflix series, Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story. They claim the show presents “awful lies” and damaging portrayals of their characters.
Lyle and Erik Menendez are currently serving life sentences for the 1989 murder of their parents. Over the years, they have tried to shift their image from that of murderers to victims who endured abuse. However, they believe Murphy’s series undermines their efforts. Erik stated that the show disrupts the narrative they’ve worked to build.
In a message on Lyle’s Facebook page, Erik expressed his frustration, asking, “Is the truth not enough?” He highlighted the discouragement he feels knowing that one influential individual can undo years of progress in addressing childhood trauma.
Erik criticized the series, stating that it aligns with the narrative presented during their 1996 trial, in which they were found guilty. He remarked, “When the prosecution built a narrative on a belief system that males were not sexually abused, and that males experienced rape and trauma differently than women, those awful lies have been disrupted.”
Erik emphasized that many brave victims have come forward over the past two decades, breaking through their personal shame to share their experiences.
Fans of the brothers have also criticized the show, particularly for portraying them in an incestuous relationship. Lyle has responded to these criticisms, urging his supporters to continue voicing their concerns.
One commenter expressed their outrage, stating, “He gave more compassion to a serial killer/cannibal than to two rape victims who made a wrong choice because they felt trapped.” Another fan, Laurie Nickel, shared her empathy, expressing a strong desire to support Lyle and Erik, saying, “Wish I could reach through the screen and give both Lyle and Erik a big hug. Undeserved and completely bizarre.”
Nickel continued to convey her sympathy, stating, “I can’t even fathom the reality in which they live. I’m incredibly sorry. So very sorry to both of them. Justice for Lyle and Erik!!”
The Menendez brothers continue to grapple with the public perception of their case, especially in light of the new portrayal that they feel misrepresents their experiences and struggles.
