The Socimi Merlin Properties has landed on the capital of Mindcaps, a subsidiary of the Phi4Tech group that plans to build a battery cell plant in Extremadura. Specific, the real estate company has participated in a capital increase valued at 12 million of euros that the company has carried out to develop this project, as confirmed to OKDIARIO, Alejandro Ayala, president and co-founder of Phi4Tech.
However, this is not the first collaboration between the companies, since last April both announced a agreement with Edged Energy, a subsidiary of the American technology company Endeavor, to become one of the suppliers of the batteries for the four ‘data centers’ that it is going to build in Madrid, Barcelona, Bilbao and Lisbon.
For its part, Merlin Properties will invest some 100 million euros in the construction of the first data center together with Edged Energy in Barcelona. Specifically, the assets will be developed in land reserves of the Socimi.
Currently, Phi4Tech is waiting to receive the urban planning license from the Badajoz City Council to start the battery factory construction, which will be located in the Logistics Platform of the capital of Badajoz. It’s about the the first lithium battery cell factory in southern Europe.
The factory will have a total area of 177,000 square meters, a planned investment of 400 million euros and it will mean the creation of 200 jobs in the first phase and 500 jobs at the time of maximum production: in 2026.
The project expects to have the capacity to produce 2 GW of batteries in 2023 and gradually increase its size until reach 10 GW by 2025 with an option to expand to 20 GW two years later. At the moment, Phi4Tech is finalizing at its facilities in Noblejas (Toledo) the battery cell prototype that will later be manufactured in Badajoz.
In total, the project that the company plans to carry out will have a investment of about 1,000 million euros and will generate approximately 1,600 jobs in the community, most of them direct.
The cathode factory It is the second big leg of the project. It will be located in Cáceres – in a place yet to be determined. It will have an investment of 200 million and will create 360 jobs, according to the first estimates. From there, cathodes will be sold to the Badajoz cell factory and other factories at a European and international level.
Secondly, the Las Navas lithium mining project in Cañaveral it also plays a very important role in development. It will have a total investment of about 318 million euros.
