On September 23, a suburban library in Detroit faced an unexpected closure due to an unusual incident involving pests. The Royal Oak Public Library had to shut its doors after a DVD case returned in a book drop was discovered to be infested with bugs.

The library announced on social media that the facility would remain closed on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday morning after multiple insects were found inside the DVD case. The case was returned after the library’s closing hours on Friday and before it reopened on Saturday morning.

According to the library’s post, “The DVD was returned sometime after we closed on Friday and before we opened on Saturday, so nothing prior to that would have been affected.” To address the situation, the library took prompt action by locking the book drops and bagging all items that were in those drops. These items were then isolated in a garage for further inspection.

On Monday, the library provided an update, revealing that a pest control company had evaluated the situation and deemed the facility safe to reopen. The pests were specifically identified as cockroaches, which raised immediate concern among the library staff and the community.

In a reassuring follow-up message, the library assured visitors, “We receive monthly pest inspections of the building, so you should not have any worries about coming to the library.” This statement aimed to alleviate concerns that the incident could pose an ongoing health risk.

The quick response of the library staff illustrated a commitment to addressing unforeseen issues to maintain a safe environment for patrons. By locking the book drops and isolating the affected items, they ensured that no other books or DVDs would be compromised during the period of concern.

The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of regular pest inspections in public spaces, particularly those frequented by large numbers of people. Libraries, as community hubs, play a vital role and must maintain cleanliness and hygiene to foster an inviting atmosphere for all visitors.

Overall, the Royal Oak Public Library’s swift action and transparent communication with the public demonstrate effective crisis management. Through regular inspections and immediate responses to problems, libraries can safeguard their facilities and reassure patrons of their commitment to health and safety.
